Who is Dr Z?
My name is Dr. Zaheera Soomar. I was born in South Africa, am a dual South African and Canadian Citizen, and have lived across South Africa, Botswana, India, the UAE, Canada and KSA. Today, I move between Canada and Madina, KSA — but truthfully, the world has long been my classroom, my calling, and my place of service.
I wear many hats: business advisor, academic, professor, investor, coach, speaker, wife, mother of three, sister, daughter, friend, and community builder. Yet over the past decade, one thread has woven all these roles together — purposeful travel rooted in service, connection, and humanitarian relief.
For more than 20 years, I have traveled intentionally across multiple countries — not simply to explore, but to serve. Through humanitarian missions, faith-based retreats, community initiatives, and global fundraising efforts, I have helped raise over $1M for communities in need. From delivering aid and supporting grassroots projects to organizing transformative retreats and historical journeys, my work has always centered around impact.
With a passport stamped by over 75 countries, I have witnessed both the breathtaking beauty of our world and the urgent needs within it. Travel, for me, has never been about checking destinations off a list. It is about standing in solidarity, building bridges across cultures, uplifting communities, and allowing experiences to transform us from the inside out.
As an avid mountain climber with dreams of completing the Seven Summits, I am constantly reminded that the greatest journeys are the ones that challenge us — physically, spiritually, and emotionally. Service has been my summit for over a decade.
So many women have reached out over the years asking to join these journeys — the explorations, the retreats, the missions, the giving back.
DrZExplore was born from that request.
This platform is about creating space — safe, intentional, purpose-driven space — for women to travel with meaning. To explore with depth. To give back while they grow. To see the world not just as tourists, but as contributors.

Testimonials
It is genuinely hard to put into words what this trip meant to me, as words alone don’t fully describe the impact. I went to Egypt wanting to give and help others for the sake of Allah, but I came home feeling like Allah had given me far more than I could ever have given.
The most meaningful part was being able to help people directly. Sitting with Palestinian families, hearing their stories, understanding what they had been through and then being able to provide things they genuinely needed made everything feel very real. It wasn’t just giving aid and leaving. We spent time with people, listened to them, laughed with them and treated them like people rather than simply beneficiaries.
You realise that something which may feel small to you can mean so much to another person. Being able to ease even a tiny part of someone’s hardship is a privilege, and it reminded me that when Allah puts you in a position to help someone, that opportunity itself is a blessing.
Dr Z was an incredible lead. Everything was clear, prompt and organised, and I always felt safe and looked after. You could focus completely on the people you were there to serve without worrying about everything happening behind the scenes.
And then there are the people Allah places in your path along the way. You arrive as strangers and leave having served, prayed, laughed and cried together. I made friendships that I genuinely believe will last a lifetime.
The whole experience brought me closer to my deen and reminded me what really matters in this dunya. Alhamdulillah that Allah allowed me to be part of it. I pray He accepts everything we did, puts barakah in the lives of everyone we met and gives us the opportunity to do it again. If pure thinking of making a difference, I would immerse yourself in an opportunity like this, it’s something nothing can teach you, except experiencing it first hand will change your life for the better.
It was one of those experiences that stays in your heart long after you come home. I would do it again in a heartbeat.

My humanitarian trip to the Jerash Refugee Camp in Jordan with HOPES for Development was life-changing, but one of the greatest gifts of that experience was getting to know Dr Zaheera Soomar.
Zaheera is genuinely one of the most incredible human beings I have ever met. What stands out most about her is her sincerity. It’s difficult to put into words because it’s something you experience rather than something she speaks about. She pours her whole heart into this work, into the people she serves and into every person who joins her on the journey.
Our trip was exceptionally well organised, we were always taken care of, and everything flowed seamlessly. But what impressed me far more than the logistics was watching the way Zaheera engages with the community. There is such genuine care, dignity and respect in the way she approaches humanitarian work. HOPES itself places enormous emphasis on ensuring that beneficiaries are treated with dignity rather than simply as recipients of aid, and that philosophy was something we experienced throughout the trip.
The team at HOPES in Jordan is phenomenal. Despite working with limited resources, they are doing deeply meaningful work within the Jerash Refugee Camp, not only providing immediate support but focusing on education, skills development and creating sustainable opportunities for families.
There are memories from that trip that will stay with me forever. When we were leaving the camp, everyone came out to say goodbye and one of the ladies gave me the most enormous hug. I still feel that hug today. It captured everything the trip had become for me: not simply giving to people, but connecting with them.
If you are considering joining one of Zaheera’s humanitarian trips, my advice is very simple: you MUST do it.
Zaheera has an extraordinary ability to turn a humanitarian trip into something far more meaningful than a week of volunteering. You leave with a completely different perspective on life, on service and on what truly matters. The work she is doing, and the heart with which she does it, is something very special.

For years I dreamt of travelling to volunteer and do humanitarian work. There was always an obstacle or the time was just not right. Finances, family obligations, school, work. This and that. I always felt like it wasn’t fair as this was where my heart really is and wanted to be but now I am certain that Allah had a better plan for me and he delayed this trip for me because he wanted me to cross paths with Sr. Zaheera.
Travelling with Zaheera was truly an honor and if I had imagined how I would have wanted my first volunteering trip to be like I would have imagined it to be exactly what my first trip with her was like. It’s travel with purpose, focused, short but filled with many great achievements and many great memories. From the amazing people I met to the places I visited. It was everything I wanted and needed and more.
I have every intention to travel with Zaheera on a yearly basis, bi Ithn Allah.
